NH Inmates Battling Addiction Get an Unlikely Ally: a Puppy

Inmates at a New Hampshire jail are getting the chance to raise several puppies that will go to military veterans or first responders struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and other challenges.

The partnership between Hero Pups and the Merrimack County Department of Corrections is the first of its kind in the state. The four puppies arrived at the jail Jan. 2 and spent the past week getting to know their handlers. The handlers are in the jail's drug treatment program. The hope is that caring for the puppies will give the inmates skills they can use once they are released.

The chocolate Labrador retriever mix puppies started obedience training Thursday with the inmates. The puppies will spend two months with the inmates before being placed in homes.
