A suspect has been arrested after a hit-and-run in Barnstead, New Hampshire left a golden retriever dead.

The hit-and-run accident happened on Route 28 near what used to be JJ's Restaurant, Barnstead police said.

Witnesses told police they saw a red sedan with New Hampshire plates hit the dog while traveling northbound. The female driver pulled over, and she and her passenger got out of the car to see if it had been damaged.

Witnesses said the two didn't check on the dog or call police. According to state law, a driver who knowingly hits a dog and does not report the incident as soon as possible will be guilty of a violation.

Evidence found at the scene led officials to announce Thursday that they were looking for a 2013-2014 Subaru Legacy or Outback with front end damage.

Barnstead police spent the day Thursday looking for the suspect, tweeting out information and photos of the evidence left behind at the scene. They announced late Thursday that the car and the suspect had been located.

Officials said they will release more information as it is made available.
