New Hampshire Fish and Game officials credit a good Samaritan and other volunteers with coming to an injured hiker's aid while conservation officers were stretched thin with other calls for help.
Officials say 30-year-old Katrin Henker of Dresden, Germany, was hiking with a German friend Saturday on the Boot Spur Trail on Mount Washington when she slipped and injured an ankle.
The two hikers struggled to continue down the trail when, officials say, a good Samaritan hiker encountered them and called for help.
The helpful hiker and Henker's companion - aided by volunteers from the Appalachian Mountain Club - helped her hobble two miles over the course of four hours reach to the trailhead.
Officials say the German pair had appropriate gear and extra food and water.
