Outrageous Warmth Heads off February

Dialing it Down this Week

Now that was a mild spring day! Admit it, you were tempted to throw on a t-shirt and shorts and go for a walk. Wouldn't blame you with highs cresting in the low and mid 60s across most of Southern New England this afternoon. It was warm enough to break a record (66) in Providence and come within a degree (65) in Boston. Sun and a favorable wind from the southwest piggybacked on a mild Sunday night to make it all happen.

The only thing that kept us from lingering in the 60s this afternoon (and possibly crushing records) was a sharp cold front. It passed through around noon and stopped the warm-up dead in its tracks. Temps crumbled through the mid to late afternoon, as we "cooled" back to the 40s and 50s by sunset.

Now onto a beautiful looking Tuesday. A big high pressure system will try to bring us back to reality tomorrow, but coming off a semi-mild night and tons of sun, we should still make low 40s in many spots.

So how does a midweek rainstorm sound about now? Like it or not, we're heading for a windswept rain on Wednesday afternoon. There's even a possibility for a rumble of thunder across Western Mass. and Connecticut. Gusty winds will howl from the southeast - precluding a major warm-up this time around. In fact, some spots across Northern New England will have a hard time making it to 40.

In wake of the storm, we'll cool gradually, as highs drop back to the 40s Thursday and the 30s on Friday. I'm not seeing a significant cooldown until perhaps the middle of next week. Even then, it may not have staying power...much like the way this winter has been behaving.

On that note, it's only been 38 days since our last 60+ day in Boston...
"waaay" back on Christmas Day. Very telling in this "winter that wasn't".
