A woman has died after an SUV burst out of an auto shop and hit her as she was walking in Malden, Massachusetts, on Monday, authorities said.

The SUV's speed as it crashed out of the auto shop and crossed the street left it perched atop a brick wall.

The 86-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, was walking on Hunting Street near Salem Street in Malden at about 1:38 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to a statement from the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.

A man in his 20s was in the SUV, a Toyota RAV4, in the auto body across the street, prosecutors said in the statement. The "vehicle crashed through the door of the shop and traveled across the street before striking the woman."

She was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver, who remained at the scene of the crash, was taken to a hospital, authorities said.

Prosecutors didn't say what's believed to have caused the SUV to break out of the auto shop, where a garage door was seen broken Monday afternoon. They also didn't give the condition of the driver.

Witnesses said they heard a loud boom and saw the woman stricken near her walker, while the driver was dazed. A manager at a nearby business said the woman routinely walked around the block.

Prosecutors are investigating with state and local police.

Police had told city officials of the accident in front of the Econo Lodge on Hunting Street, according to a tweet from the city sent earlier in the day. Officials urged the public to avoid the area of the accident at the time.
