A 45-year-old father was killed in a stabbing late Monday night in Everett, Massachusetts, according to authorities, who say the victim was trying to protect his teenage son.

The stabbing happened just before 10:30 p.m. Monday on Cherry Street after a brief altercation, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Everett Chief of Police Steven Mazzie. The victim was identified Tuesday by a family friend as Mark Luiso. He was pronounced dead after being transported to CHA Everett.

Police said a group of teens showed up at the boy's home after 10 p.m. There was a fight, which ended in Luiso, the boy's father, being fatally stabbed in front of a house around the corner.

"He came out here protecting his son that’s what he does he did nothing but take care of his family and unfortunately it took his life this time," Liz Stoddard, a family friend, told NBC10 Boston.

Linda O'Brien said she saw the aftermath in a neighbor's driveway after she looked out the window when she heard a woman screaming.

"She was on sitting on the curb just screaming - ear piercing, ear piercing screeching - just screaming somebody help him please you have to save him," O'Brien told NBC10 Boston.

The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing by several agencies.

Witnesses said the scene was chaotic and there were police everywhere.

"There was a lot of screaming," neighbor Gaetano Denardo said. "There was a lady in the middle of the street, sitting in the middle of the street screaming. I looked out my back porch and somebody was getting CPR’d on…I just noticed the person was laying in the driveway. He was bleeding.”

Denardo also said he spotted a cellphone in front of a grey car, and then saw about a foot-long knife sitting on the hood of the vehicle, which police collected as evidence.

Michael Ricci knows the family. He, like many others in the neighborhood, applauds the father.

"What father or mother would not protect their kid?" he said.

No arrests have been made. The stabbing happened just steps from a playground and a few blocks from the police department.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, contact Everett police or the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
