Police Officer Shoots Himself in the Leg at Mass. Firing Range

A police officer shot himself in the leg during a training session at a firing range on Cape Cod Wednesday morning, officials said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to Cape Cod Hospital from the firing range on Depot Road in Harwich after the incident at about 10:30 a.m., local police said.

The Carver Police Department confirmed Wednesday that the 52-year-old officer worked for their department. They said his injuries are not life threatening and he was expected to be released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

The training was being conducted as part of the Municipal Police Training Committee's Bridge Academy program, police said. Officers from several municipalities were taking part.

Officials did not say how the shooting is believed to have taken place.

The shooting is under investigation by the Municipal Police Training Committee to ensure that all of the proper procedures and precautions were followed.
