1 Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting

Police say the officer was not injured

The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office confirms that one person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Derry on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m., in a sparsely populated neighborhood. Police said the officer was not hit by any bullets and was not injured.

Around 8:02 a.m., Derry Police received a 911 call saying that the caller's husband had just driven away from their home near Pinyon Lane. The caller said her husband was distraught, armed with a shotgun, and suicidal.

An officer responding to the scene encountered the husband's truck parked at the intersection of Scobie Pond Road and Julien Road. As the officer's cruiser approached the truck, the man in the truck began firing at him. The officer returned fire, and the man suffered a single gunshot wound and was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are not releasing the name of the man who was shot and killed pending notification of his family members. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Neighbors say while they weren't surprised to hear about another officer-involved shooting, they're shocked and alarmed that it happened here.

"This doesn't really happen for this town," said Jessica McInnis. "It's a quiet town."

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Anyone who was in the area when the shooting occurred is asked to contact Sgt. Brian Strong of the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit at 603-223-4381.
