1 Dead in 2-Car Collision

Police say the crash took place in Hopkinton around 10:00 p.m. Monday

Rhode Island State Police say one person is dead after a two-car accident on Interstate 95.

Police say the crash took place in Hopkinton around 10:00 p.m. Monday.

State Police Lieutenant Jay Gibbs tells WJAR-TV two cars were traveling southbound when one driver saw a third vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, approaching in the same direction. The driver pulled over to avoid a collision, hitting the second car and causing a collision in the break down lane.

The driver of the first car escaped uninjured.

An occupant of the second vehicle died at the scene and another was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Gibbs says the accident remains under investigation.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released, pending family notification.
