Woman, Dog Die in House Fire

Firefighters found the woman unresponsive inside the East Providence, Rhode Island, house

An East Providence, Rhode Island, woman who uses a wheelchair and her dog have died in a house fire.

Fire Chief Oscar Elmasian tells the Providence Journal that a passer-by saw flames coming from the woman's house at around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and honked a car horn to alert neighbors.

Elmasian says neighbors rushed outside to rescue the woman, whose name has not been made public.

Firefighters say they found the unresponsive woman inside the house, with her golden retriever curled up next to her. The woman was later pronounced dead.

The chief says the fire had been building for a while, and it was difficult to bring it under control.

The cause remains under investigation.
