2 Overnight Shootings in Providence; 1 Dead, 1 Critical

Police say both incidents were targeted

Police are investigating two early morning shootings in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, that left one man dead and another in critical condition.

Providence police Maj. David Lapatin tells WPRO-AM that police responded to calls of gunfire and a vehicle pursuit at about 1 a.m. Monday near the State House and Roger Williams National Memorial Park.

Officers responding to the scene came across a car accident and found a man lying on the sidewalk. Investigators believe he was one of the drivers in the car chase.

The man was not immediately identified and no arrests were reported.

It occurred minutes after a 23-year-old man was shot and rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.

Lapatin said both incidents were targeted, but it's too early to tell if they were connected or gang-related.
