20-Foot-Long Whale Washes Ashore in RI

It's unclear whether the whale died of natural causes or became stranded and subsequently died

A 20-foot-long minke whale has washed ashore at the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island.

The Newport Daily News reports that the whale washed ashore sometime Tuesday morning. It's unclear whether the whale died of natural causes or became stranded and subsequently died.

A marine biologist and volunteer for the Northeast Region Stranding Network responded to Sachuest to take some preliminary measurements of the whale.

She took photos and measurements and says researchers would likely return to take samples and further assess the whale.
