Police say one of the people had a wooden masonry stake in his hands during the dispute

Police in Providence, Rhode Island, are investigating a late night stabbing that landed a man in the hospital.

A witness told police that two men and woman were involved in an altercation in front of a Doyle Avenue home at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say one of the people had a wooden masonry stake in his hands during the dispute.

A man and the woman later fled in a dark sedan, while the victim walked to a nearby supermarket with a stab wound to his back. Two officers gave the victim first aid before he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

No name or condition was immediately released and no arrests were announced.
