Rhode Island authorities are investigating possible financial mismanagement at the state's troubled child welfare agency.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Gina Raimondo confirmed Wednesday that the Department of Children, Youth and Families had requested a state police investigation. The Providence Journal first reported the investigation.

The spokeswoman didn't immediately know when the investigation was requested or began.

The agency has had a deficit in five of the past six years and was about $16 million over budget when Raimondo took office in January.

An audit released in July cites problems in department management and financial controls.

Chief Strategy Officer Jamia McDonald, who was appointed in January to overhaul the agency, told The Associated Press last month that it was unclear whether money was being accounted for before her arrival.
