Body Found in Debris After Fire Destroys 2 Rhode Island Homes

Authorities say a body has been found in the debris after a fire in Rhode Island destroyed two waterfront homes and damaged two others.

Portsmouth police reported the discovery of the human remains on Wednesday afternoon. The body has been sent to the medical examiner's office for identification.

The blaze on Narragansett Boulevard was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials say two homes were destroyed while a third was so severely damaged it will have to be torn down. A fourth home that appeared to be under renovation suffered lighter damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Area residents reported hearing booms during the blaze, which fire officials say was probably propane tanks exploding.
