Providence, Rhode Island, police have released the name of a 63-year-old man who died in police custody after being rescued from an elevator early Sunday.

The state attorney general's office along with Providence and state police are investigating the death of Richard Cosentino.

Maj. Thomas Verdi said an autopsy is being conducted and further information wasn't being released Monday.

Police said Cosentino was rescued by firefighters after he was trapped in an elevator in the Carroll Towers public elderly housing complex where he lived. Police and firefighters got a call about the incident at around 4 a.m.

Verdi said Cosentino was arrested after he began fighting with firefighters and police officers, then suffered what appeared to be cardiac arrest in the police cruiser. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and was pronounced dead at about 5 a.m.
