A Providence, Rhode Island, firefighter was arrested on child sex charges as he arrived for work on Thursday morning.
Rhode Island State Police said Jason H. August, 32, of 2 Fraternity Circle, South Kingstown, is charged with indecent solicitation of a minor and electronically disseminating indecent material to a minor. He was also issued a civil citation for possession of marijuana.
August was ordered held on $2,000 bail at his arraignment on Thursday and ordered not to have contact with minors or use the internet for anything but work purposes. He has reportedly been suspended from his job as a firefighter without pay.
The latest news from around the state
According to WJAR-TV, August is accused of sending nude photos of himself to a boy in Massachusetts over the internet, and of soliciting at least one underage victim to send nude photos to him. Rhode Island State Police said they were alerted to the situation by the Boston Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Rhode Island State Police said the investigation is ongoing and there may be additional charges pending forensic examination of digital media seized from August.
In addition to his job as a Providence firefighter, state police said August works as the house director for Sigma Pi Housing Corporation of Rhode Island on the University of Rhode Island campus. He also coached youth basketball in Rhode Island three years ago, but police said there is no evidence to suggest that he had any inappropriate contact with minors during that time.
