The funeral for a Rhode Island police officer who died while trying to save his brother in ocean rip currents in Costa Rica will be held this week.

The service for Bristol Patrolman Richard Jean-Georges is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the Christian Hill Community Church in West Warwick. Burial will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery.

A wake is set for Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Thomas and Walter Quinn Funeral Home in Warwick.

The 29-year-old Jean-Georges and his brother were swept away by rip currents off Jaco Beach on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast on June 6. Authorities say he tried to save his younger brother, who was rescued.

Jean-Georges joined the Bristol police force four years ago.
