Gov. Raimondo Aims to Build Support for Free Tuition Expansion

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo is trying to build support for her proposal to expand the state's free tuition program.

The free tuition program is currently offered at the Community College of Rhode Island to recent high school graduates. Raimondo wants to offer it to adult students at CCRI and cover the last two years of a four-year degree at Rhode Island College.

The Democratic governor is scheduled to speak at a rally in support of the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship proposal on Tuesday at the State House.

She's also scheduled to testify Tuesday about the proposal before the House Committee on Finance.

Raimondo's budget proposal for fiscal 2020 includes $13.2 million for free tuition.

Some lawmakers have questioned whether the state can afford to expand the program.
