Police in Rhode Island are seeking the public's help after a resident found a human skull fragment in the woods over the weekend.

On Sunday, a resident was walking through the woods behind Crossbow Lane in West Warwick and located an object that appeared to be the top of a human skull. The resident contacted Rhode Island State Police. Upon arrival, troopers observed that the skull fragment was discolored and appeared to have been outside for a long time. They took custody of the skull piece and turned it over to the state medical examiner's office.

An initial report from the medical examiner's office confirmed that the fragment is the top of a human skull. Further analysis will be done to determine the age and other identifying characteristics.

Detectives from the Rhode Island State Police Criminal Identification Unit, the Major Crimes Unit and the West Warwick Police Department are conducting a joint investigation in the area in an attempt to locate any additional evidence. Detectives are also reviewing any missing person files over the last several decades.

Anyone with information that might pertain to the investigation is asked to contact the Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit at (401) 444-1046.
