Man Arrested for Beating Elderly Couple With Baseball Bat in Providence, Rhode Island

Police have arrested a man for attacking an elderly couple with a baseball bat when their car ran out of gas in Providence, Rhode Island, necn affiliate WJAR reports.

Investigators say they arrested 25-year-old Viden Chhoeun of Providence.

Rafael Carrasco, 72, and 70-year-old Maricela Carrasco ran out of gas late Wednesday night in the city's West End, police said. A man with a baseball bat allegedly came out of a house and attacked the older man around 10 p.m.

The couple's car apparently ran out of gas on Linwood Avenue and they went to get more.

"[Officers] found two elderly people both injured, both lying down," said Maj. David Lapatin. "The woman was unconscious [and] the man was badly injured."

Police said the couple was unable to speak after the beating.

"This is something that is just despicable," said Lapatin, noting that the victims were struck in the face and on the head.

Rafael Carrasco is in critical condition, and Maricela Carrasco is in serious condition.

Chhoeun is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning.
