Man Bitten by Venomous Snake Released From Hospital

Authorities say the 62-year-old man was bitten by the snake Thursday while watering his garden

An East Providence, Rhode Island, man who was bit by a venomous copperhead snake outside his home last week says he still isn't afraid of the reptiles.

John Hunter was released from a hospital Monday afternoon after several days of treatment.

Authorities say the 62-year-old man was bitten by the snake Thursday while watering his garden.

His wife spotted the snake in the backyard and when Hunter tried to capture it, the snake bit him. He told the Providence Journal it was like "getting hit with a hammer."

Hunter says the swelling from the venom spread from his hand to his forearm and then up his entire arm.

The snake was captured. Department of Environmental Management officials confirmed it was a juvenile Northern copperhead. They are still investigating where it came from.
