Nightclub Owners Want Firearms for Bouncers

Nightclub owners in the city want their security guards to have weapons in an effort to increase safety for patrons

Officials are raising concerns over a bid by Providence, Rhode Island, nightclub owners to arm their bouncers.

Nightclub owners in the city want their security guards to have weapons in an effort to increase safety for patrons. The Providence Board of Licenses is considering the proposal and on Monday sought advice from police.

The Providence Journal reports that state Sen. Juan Pichardo, the board chairman, said matters could get sticky if police arrive at the scene and can't find the culprit because multiple guns are drawn.

Maj. David Lapatin says he's concerned that private security guards aren't trained the same way as police.

Lapatin says police plan to research the issue and give the license board a firm opinion.
