Off-Duty Firefighter Hurt in Crash in Providence, Rhode Island

Police in Providence, Rhode Island, are searching for the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash that seriously injured an off-duty firefighter.

Police said 27-year-old Matthew Gallant was in a pickup truck that collided with an SUV at about 2 a.m. Saturday on the Smithfield Avenue overpass. It took rescue workers about 30 minutes to free Gallant from the truck. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was reported in critical condition.

Police said the driver of the SUV ran away from the scene after the crash.

Acting Fire Chief Scott Mello told the Providence Journal that Gallant joined the department in 2013 and is from a family of firefighters that includes his father, a retired battalion chief, and two uncles who are still members of the department.
