A Providence police officer has been charged with stealing from a police evidence room.
Police and the state attorney general's office said Thursday that 36-year veteran officer Michael McCarthy was charged with one count of fraudulent conversion. He was arraigned Thursday and released on $5,000 bail.
The department says he is suspended without pay. It is unclear if McCarthy is represented by a lawyer.
Police said the investigation began when a sergeant in charge of the property and evidence room noticed some items were missing.
The investigation is ongoing and the department says more charges are expected against McCarthy.
