About 85 pounds of marijuana was seized by Rhode Island authorities on Thursday after a man allegedly hired a taxi cab to drive him from New York to Massachusetts.
Twenty-one-year-old Bing Zhou Liu was arraigned on several drug trafficking charges, including possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
Authorities say they pulled over a New York taxi for speeding on I-95 N in Richmond. During that time, the taxi driver reportedly told troopers he was paid $400 to drive Liu from New York to Massachusetts. Police say with a probable cause search, they found five FedEx boxes that had 85 individually wrapped, vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana, weighing about 85 pounds.
Police say their investigation led to Liu as the owner of the marijuana, which is estimated to be worth about $300,000.
Liu is being held at the Adult Correctional Institute pending a bail hearing on April 8.
