Thousands of students celebrated the Friars NCAA championship men's hockey win and Providence Police tell NBC 10 a police officer was injured during the celebrations Saturday night after he was hit in the head with a bottle.
Officer Michael Clary was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he received stitches. His condition was not immediately known.
Saturday night fans gathered near the Providence College campus at Pembroke Avenue and Eaton Street. According to the Providence Incident Report Detail provided by the Providence Police an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people were gathered in the area of Pembroke near Eaton Street.
A couch was burned according to Providence firefighters, but was put out after 11 p.m. Students clogged the streets as they celebrated the win.
Rhode Island State Troopers were called in to back up the Providence Police Department. Major David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department said he did not believe there were any arrests. The Providence Fire Department was also on hand.
There will be a national championship celebration for the Providence College men's ice hockey team at the Schneider Arena on Tuesday. Doors will open at 3 p.m. and the celebration is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
Head Coach Nate Leaman, Athletics Director Bob Driscoll and Providence College President Reverend Brian Shanley, and select players will address the crowd at 4 p.m.
