R.I. Baby-Sitter to Serve 7 Years on Child Abuse Charges

A Rhode Island man has pleaded no contest to abusing a 5-month-old baby.

The state attorney general's office says 27-year-old Kristofer Bernier, of Woonsocket, was sentenced to serve seven years of a 15-year prison sentence with the remainder suspended with probation.

He was charged with second-degree child abuse in connection with injuries sustained by the child in March 2017.

Authorities say Bernier initially told police the baby had fallen off a couch while he was baby-sitting for the parents.

He later admitted he had "lost it" because the baby wouldn't stop crying and struck the child several times and dropped the baby on a coffee table and the floor.

The child suffered a fractured skull, retinal hemorrhages and multiple bruises and spent two months in the hospital recovering.
