RI Politicians Get First Ride in Autonomous Vehicle Shuttle

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza got to ride in the state's first driverless-vehicle shuttle a day before the general public could take advantage of the free service.

The Democratic governor said after Tuesday's ride she was "a little nervous" at first, but after a couple of minutes, it felt great.

The Democratic mayor said it was a tad boring, just like a normal car ride, and he felt safe.

The "Little Roady" autonomous vehicle pilot program will operate seven days a week, with 12 stops on a roughly 5-mile route between Olneyville Square and Providence Station. There's no public transit along the full route.

Each vehicle holds six people, including an attendant who has the ability to take control at any time to ensure safety.
