Gov. Gina Raimondo has signed an executive order to cut down on unnecessary regulations and attract businesses to Rhode Island.

The order requires agencies to submit drafts of new regulations to the Office of Management and Budget and the Executive Office of Commerce, with an analysis of the costs and benefits.

The order says superfluous rules often impose unnecessary costs on businesses and municipalities. The budget office is responsible for approving the proposed regulations.

Existing rules will be reviewed to ensure they're clearly written, relevant and up to date.

Raimondo says her staff will meet with business leaders to identify unnecessary regulations and regulatory processes that discourage business growth so she can eliminate them.

She says she's focused on expanding opportunities for residents and encouraging businesses to create jobs.
