R.I. Soldier Killed in Afghanistan Laid to Rest

Hundreds gathered for the Mass for 1st Sgt. Peter Andrew McKenna Jr.

A funeral Mass has been held in Rhode Island for an Army Green Beret killed in Afghanistan.

Hundreds gathered for the Mass for 1st Sgt. Peter Andrew McKenna Jr. on Monday at St. Mary of the Bay Church in Warren.

Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bristol. The burial will be open to the public.

Main Street in Warren was closed to traffic and hundreds of onlookers lined the street.

McKenna died Aug. 7 in Kabul during an attack on a NATO facility. The body of the 35-year-old Bristol native arrived Friday at the Quonset State Airport in North Kingstown. McKenna was a 17-year veteran of the Army.

State flags are flying at half-staff.
