Struggling Family-Owned Store Closing After 71 Years

The family announced Monday that Wilson's of Wickford will close by Oct. 2 after selling men's clothing for more than 70 years

A struggling family-owned clothing store in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, is closing one year after raising $150,000 through an online crowdfunding site to stay afloat.

The family announced Monday that Wilson's of Wickford will close by Oct. 2 after selling men's clothing for more than 70 years.

The store was started in in 1944 by the Wilson family. Three generations of Wilsons have now owned it.

The store's owners said last year that the bad economy and changes in the industry had made it difficult to remain open. They asked for the money to pay vendors, purchase new products and upgrade the store.

James Wilson tells The Providence Journal that the family is not considering crowdfunding again.

A "retirement sale" began Wednesday with hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
