Teen to Be Tried as An Adult in Shooting Outside RI School

Police say that 15-year-old William Parsons was an "innocent bystander" who was shot and killed following a fight near the school

A teenager charged with shooting and killing a 15-year-old high school student in Rhode Island will be tried as an adult.

The Providence Journal reports 17-year-old Joel Loarca was arraigned Tuesday in District Court. He faces a charge of murder and firearms violations in the Sept. 5, 2018 shooting of William Parsons outside the Providence Career and Technical Academy. It was the second day of school.

Loarca didn't enter a plea and was referred to the public defender's office. He was ordered held without bail.

Police say Parsons, a student at Central High School, was an innocent bystander.

Police say Loarca accidentally shot himself in the thigh as he fled the scene.

The attorney general's office sought to have Loarca tried as an adult.
