Town Auctioning 105-Year-Old School

Tiverton, Rhode Island, officials are selling a century-old schoolhouse to avoid the cost of keeping it or tearing it down

Tiverton, Rhode Island, officials are selling a century-old schoolhouse to avoid the cost of keeping it or tearing it down.

A public auction is set for the next few weeks on the lawn of the Tiverton Community Center.

The Newport Daily News reports  that Town Administrator Matthew J. Wojcik says demolishing the 105-year-old building would cost $60,000 and post-demolition would be at least $30,000.

He says a neighbor of the property has shown an interest in buying it.

The building costs the town about $8,000 a year for utilities and other expenses. It is used by the harbor master and volunteer boards and commissions for meeting space.

The Rhode Island Historic Preservation and Heritage Commission says the building, which built in 1909, was a two-room schoolhouse.
