URI Acquires Synthetic Cadavers for Research, Training

The corpses cost close to $50,000 each, but URI paid about $25,000 for four of them thanks to an educational discount and a large grant

The University of Rhode Island has recently acquired synthetic medical cadavers for use in classes and training at its Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences.

The Providence Journal reports the synthetic corpses made by SynDaver Labs of Tampa, Florida are touted as being more realistic than plastic body parts commonly found in college labs and less costly to maintain than actual cadavers.

The corpses cost close to $50,000 each, but URI paid about $25,000 for four of them thanks to an educational discount and a large grant.

Lab manager Aura Grandidge says URI is one of the only colleges in New England to have synthetic cadavers.

The cadavers weigh about 80 pounds and are complete with artificial tissues made from water fibers and salt.
