An arts program for young people in Providence, Rhode Island, has received an award from the White House.

Providence CityArts was one of 12 programs to receive the 2014 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. First lady Michelle Obama presented the awards Monday at the White House.

More than 350 programs applied for the award, the nation's highest honor for after-school arts and humanities programs.

Providence CityArts serves more than 1,200 children ages 8 through 14 who have few opportunities for consistent and affordable arts education. It provides experience in areas such as art, design, performing arts, and creative writing.

The award is given by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

Providence CityArts will also receive $10,000 among other benefits.
