Thousands Without Power After Severe Thunderstorms

Storms moved through portions of Southern New England

Several campers have received minor injuries after a line of powerful thunderstorms swept through southern New England and knocked down trees at Burlingame State Park in Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says nine were hurt and one of those was taken to the hospital Tuesday by ambulance after falling trees struck campers or their tents.

The storms caused numerous power outages

National Grid said more than 100,000 customers remained without electricity at noon on Tuesday in Rhode Island. Utilities also reported thousands of outages in Massachusetts.

Wind gusts of more than 60 mph were reported, along with heavy rain and severe lightning.

Downed trees blocked many roadways and several police cruisers in Barrington, Rhode Island were damaged when a tree fell behind the station.
