Human skeletal remains were found near a high school in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Tuesday morning, police said.

The remains were found by a work crew in wooded wetlands between the Wakefield Memorial High School tennis courts and Rivers Lane at about 11 a.m., police said.

Officers were expected to be investigating during the school's dismissal later Tuesday, but there is no threat to the school, according to Wakefield police.

It wasn't immediately clear how old the skeletal remains are, but they were confirmed as human, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

Footage from the scene showed officials in a patch of woods near the school.

State and local police were examining the scene, along with medical examiners.

People who live in the area say it is terrifying to think that human remains may have been in their backyards for who knows how long.

Saritin Rizzuto called it "nerve-wracking."

"You start thinking about the what ifs, or are we all safe and who could have done what to who? But we have yet to learn more, and I just hope it could have been something accidental," Rizzuto said.
