Snow Causes Hundreds of Crashes Across New England

So far, no serious injuries have been reported

Hundreds of crashes are being reported across New England as a result of Friday's snowstorm, making a mess of traffic.

Speeds on the Massachusetts Turnpike have been reduced to 40 mph, and the Maine Turnpike and interstates 89 and 93 and the Everett Turnpike in New Hampshire have reduced speeds to 45 mph.

Police in many communities are urging motorists to stay off the roads.

In Massachusetts, a jack-knifed tractor trailer closed all lanes on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Blandford, and two jack-knifed tractor trailers resulted in lane closures on the Mass Pike in Palmer. A disabled tractor trailer is also blocking the ramp from Interstate 95 south to Interstate 93 north in Reading. Numerous other accidents and slide-offs were also reported, including one on Upper Road in Deerfield.

In Connecticut, state police said Interstate 84 in Union was effectively shut down around noon because so many tractor trailers are stuck on the highway and no one can get by. In all, more than 300 accidents had been reported in the state as of 2 p.m. Friday.

In Maine, a multiple-vehicle crash closed a section of Route 1 in Scarborough. A stretch of Route 114 in Sebago was also closed around 8:30 a.m. due to an accident. Another accident involving several vehicles was reported on Route 302 in Windham around 11:30 a.m.

In New Hampshire, numerous crashes were reported on interstates 89 and 93, and a multiple vehicle crash was reported on Route 121 in Atkinson. Another crash was reported in Exeter.

David Goodwin, 33, was driving his pickup truck on Kingston Road when he lost control, slid, and hit a utility pole. After getting out of his vehicle, he was hit by another vehicle that slid off the road. Goodwin suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Issues have also been reported on Rhode Island roadways, including interstates 195 and 495 and Route 146.

In Vermont, a milk truck rolled over on Interstate 91 around 8 a.m., causing another tractor trailer to jack knife. The highway was shut down for about an hour and a half while the tractor trailer was removed.
