A student was stabbed at a high school in Malden, Massachusetts, after a fight broke out Thursday afternoon.

Officials said the Malden High School student had superficial injuries - described as a minor cut on the forehead - after another student stabbed him with a sharp object.

Malden High Principal Chris Mastrangelo said, "A student's forehead was hit with a sharp object. The injuries were not life threatening."

The injured student, however, was taken away by ambulance.

Police did take the other student -- a minor -- into custody and are investigating the incident.

"We are talking to some students who might have been present and can help us and give us some enlightenment on what happened," said Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis, adding he has no concern this could be an ongoing type of thing such as gang violence.

Police are trying to clear up what type of weapon was used in Thursday's incident.

When asked if it was a knife, the police chief responded, "All we're hearing is a sharp object. Again, it would be speculation as to how the mechanism of injury occurred and what was involved. We're piecing things together as we speak."

Video of the attack is shocking. Appearing in a hallway, two boys can be seen fighting, with one trying to stab the other, jabbing at him twice. The victim did not appear badly hurt, fighting off his attacker who runs away.

The school was locked down during the incident around noon, but that has since been lifted.

Several parents made their way to the school after learning what happened.

A man who has two children at the school says he got a message from one of his friends saying there was an incident at the school. He panicked after he heard something really bad happened and went running to the school.

An officer who spoke with NBC10 Boston on Thursday said there are a lot of good things happening at Malden High and he doesn't want this incident to put the school in a bad light.

An investigation is ongoing.
