I-93 South Reopens After Trash Truck Fire in O'Neill Tunnel

Traffic was being diverted off Exit 26

A trash truck fire in the O'Neill Tunnel caused major backups on Interstate 93 south in Boston on Thursday afternoon.

Aerial footage showed southbound traffic backed up for miles over the Zakim Bridge.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said all southbound lanes were closed approaching the tunnel near Exit 20 around 1:30 p.m. Traffic was diverted off Exit 26.

As of 4 p.m., MassDOT said that all southbound lanes on I-93 had reopened.

A multi-vehicle crash was also reported on I-93 north at Exit 26. The right lane was temporarily closed but has since reopened.
