Trial Begins for Man Accused of Trying to Sell Teen for Sex

William Shine, of Franklin, appeared Monday in Merrimack County Superior Court in Concord

The trial for a New Hampshire man accused of trying to sell a 14-year-old for sex is underway.

William Shine, of Franklin, appeared Monday in Merrimack County Superior Court in Concord on charges of child sex trafficking and endangering the welfare of a child.

Twenty-seven-year-old Anthony O'Hickey says he offered Shine $5,000 to try to protect the girl from his own father, who he says sexually abused him as a child and wanted to buy the girl.

Prosecutors say O'Hickey gave Shine and his wife $1,000 on Nov. 25, 2014 to take the girl to a hotel room and have sex with her. They say the couple was desperate for money.

The defense claims they were considering an arranged courtship which they say isn't a crime under New Hampshire law.
