Rain will continue into the evening. The heaviest rain will fall over eastern Massachusetts. We’re expecting a general 1-3” of rain throughout the region.
Winds will increase. A Wind Advisory has been issued for the Cape and Islands from 8 p.m. until noon on Monday. With the locally heavy rain and the ongoing drought, 45 mph winds will be enough to bring down some tree limbs and even shallow rooted trees. We’re not expecting any widespread power outages, but there could be some localized power disruptions.
These showers will vary from steady to light drizzle through our Sunday, but what is interesting about this rain is it is fueled by the tropical moisture from what was once Hurricane Matthew, that has now become post-tropical storm Matthew.
As of 11 a.m., Providence, R.I. had already seen 0.68 inches of rain while most places in southeastern New England have registered at least 0.25 inches. Showers will clear from west to east, but the rain will continue to hug the coastline. Areas east of I-95 in Maine and N.H. and stretching down to SE of I-84 in Mass. & Conn. will be the areas that will see the most rain out of this system.
Last Thursday, the very latest Drought Monitor report was issued showing severe drought had expanded westward. Before today's steady and much-needed rainfall, the rainfall deficit was nearing 11 inches for downtown Boston, Mass., but the largest rainfall deficit is in Manchester, N.H. which is under by 16.08 inches.
Some places under extreme drought including Boston, R.I. and the Cape and the Islands could get almost 2 inches of rainfall from this system alone.
