Tropical Storm Hermine Becomes Hurricane Hermine

Landfall in Florida is expected late Thursday night or very early Friday morning

It’s now Hurricane Hermine. Hermine will be the first Hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Wilma in 2005. Tropical storm conditions are possible from Tampa through the panhandle – hurricane conditions will be likely in the "Big Bend" portion of the state.

Landfall is expected late Thursday night or very early Friday morning.

After landfall, the storm will weaken back to a tropical storm. Tropical storm conditions are likely all the way north, through the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The storm will likely reemerge off the coast of North Carolina or Virginia Saturday morning.

By Sunday morning, the storm will be east of southern New Jersey and it’s like to stall out. I know everyone is wondering: how will this impact the holiday weekend?

Here are the two scenarios:

  • High pressure will prevent the storm from moving into southern New England. In this case southern Connecticut, southern Rhode Island and the Cape and Islands will see some fringe effects. Example: showers and gusty winds on Monday and Tuesday.
  • High pressure is weak and the storm moves into our area – that’s the second scenario. In this case we would see Nor’easter conditions for most of southern New England Monday and Tuesday.
At this point, there is an equal chance of both scenarios coming to fruition.
