One man has died following a head-on car crash in Vermont.

According to Vermont State Police, they received reports of a two vehicle collision with entrapment Friday just before 11 p.m. They responded to Vermont Route 12 in the town of Elmore by Camp Road.

The investigation revealed that the driver of a Subaru had traveled left of center and collided head on with another Subaru.

Police identified the driver of the first car as Colby Costello, 26, of Wolcott, Vermont and the driver of the second car as Dexter Thurston, 19, of Walcott. Thurston also had a passenger in the car, Deacon Slayton, 11, of Elmore, Vermont. Neither Thurston nor Slayton were wearing seat belts, police said.

According to police, Thurston died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Costello is currently being treated for minor injuries at Copley Hospital in Morristown.

Both cars were totaled in the collision, police said.

Route 12 in Elmore was closed for approximately six and a half hours while State Police and the Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the collision.

The road has since reopened.

According to police, both speed and impairment contributed to this collision.

Costello was cited for gross negligent operation- death resulting (felony) per the Lamoille County State's Attorney. Additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.

He is scheduled to be back in court on Aug. 22 at 12:30 p.m. It is unclear if he has an attorney.

Editor’s note: It was erroneously reported Costello was held without bail. He was only cited.
