10-Year-Old Badly Burned After Rocket Fuel Explodes

Vermont State Police say Dakota Allen was with his 13-year-old brother in the backyard of their Newark home when the nitro-methane they were playing with exploded

A 10-year-old Vermont boy is in a Boston hospital after suffering severe chemical burns to nearly 75 percent of his body while playing with bottle rocket fuel.

Vermont State Police say Dakota Allen was with his 13-year-old brother in the backyard of their Newark home when the nitro-methane they were playing with exploded.

A neighbor reported the accident Monday morning. Police say he and his brother found the rocket fuel in a storage shed in the backyard. Allen was handling the chemical when it exploded. He was taken to Shriners Hospital for treatment.

Police say they do not expect criminal charges will be filed.

Lt. Mike Henry says there were no adults present. It is unclear what caused the explosion.

Allen's surgery was scheduled for Wednesday.
