29 Cited After Vermont Statehouse Health Care Protest

Vermont State Police say nine of the 29 demonstrators arrested after refusing to leave the chamber of the Vermont House as part of a protest against the decision by Gov. Peter Shumlin to abandon his call for a single-payer health care system are facing charges for resisting arrest.

The protesters were arrested Thursday, after Shumlin's inaugural address. They have been ordered to appear in criminal court in Barre at a later date.

The protesters are supporters of a publicly funded universal health care system.

At several points during Shumlin's inaugural address, the protesters interrupted the proceedings by chanting and unfurling banners. Singing could also be heard in the halls.
