3 Men Plead Not Guilty in Fatal Beating

Three Maine men accused of beating and kicking a man to death in his apartment have each pleaded not guilty to murder.

Twenty-three-year-old Abil Teshome, 31-year-old Osman Sheikh and 37-year-old Mohamud Mohamed, all of Portland, were arrested on Aug. 13.

Police say 49-year-old Freddy Akoa, of Portland, suffered 22 rib fractures, cuts and bruises to his head and torso and a lacerated liver from the fatal Aug. 9 attack.

Justice Thomas Warren set bail for each man at $500,000 cash at hearings Tuesday in the Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland.

Attorneys for the men say they will not contest the bail for now, noting that they can still request a bail hearing later.

Each man faces up to life in prison if convicted of murder.
