4 Guatemalans Arrested in Vermont Border-Crossing Case

Four Guatemalan citizens are facing charges in what federal prosecutors in Vermont are calling an immigrant-smuggling episode in the Beebe Plain neighborhood of Derby.

Court documents say Border Patrol agents were notified early Thursday that two people were seen walking in a field just south of the Canadian border.

An agent using an infrared monitor spotted three people standing at the end of the dead-end Lawson Road. Agents later spotted a van that was flashing its lights.

Three got into the van from the brush. The van was stopped several minutes later.

One man is charged with human smuggling. The three men who got into the van are facing misdemeanor charges of being in the country illegally.
