Volunteers have been pouring in to help over 60 animals that were rescued from a squalid home in Eden, Vermont.

Police say they served a search warrant on the property at 10 a.m. Wednesday and found the animals - mostly dogs - living in what they described as "appalling conditions" with no access to fresh water.

One Chittenden County Humane Society worker described the animals' owner as an "overwhelmed rescuer."

Authorities say the owner, who police did not name, is cooperating and has released many of the animals for adoption.

The animals were taken to an undisclosed location in Chittenden County, where they are being triaged by a team of veterinarians.

WPTZ reports about 100 volunteers are working to provide care for the animals and give them a fresh start.

The investigation is continuing and authorities did not rule out the possibility of criminal charges.
